Two Fools on the Road to Emmaus Podcast – Following some violent protests at the recent G20 summit in Toronto, the guys begin discussing non-violent protest vs. pacifism.  This leads into an exploration of the way we relate to each other in terms of power, and raises questions of how we choose to either lay down our rights (power) or cling to them, each day.

The Evergreen’s Crown

A young pupil wanted to prove his commitment and trust in his teacher.  “Master, I want you to see how much I trust you with my life.  Give me a challenge, ask me to do anything, and I will do it—no matter how dangerous,” he spouted confidently.

“If you insist, I will not refuse you.  But take a night’s sleep before demanding this of me,” replied the teacher softly.

“Very well, I will take a night’s sleep.”

The next day the pupil returned more adamant than ever, “Please master, you must see how devoted I am to you.  It is important to me.”

Dark Night of the Soul – Night Two

Two Fools on the Road to Emmaus Podcast – This week the guys continue their conversation about the “Dark Night of The Soul”.  They explore why it can seem dark and what is happening.

St. John of the Cross, a Carmelite priest from Spain, coined the phrase the “dark night of the soul”.  It is a poignant metaphor used to describe a phase in a person’s spiritual life that is marked by a sense of loneliness and desolation.   St. John’s stories tell of the soul’s journey from a bodily home to its union with God.  In this story, St. John depicts this journey taking place at night, the darkness representing the trials and struggles as a person matures deeply in Christ.  It is the process whereby all the things we had relied upon to give us meaning and satisfaction apart from God begin to lose their ability to do so, and at the same time God begins the work of becoming the source of our meaning, identity and satisfaction.  Read the rest of this entry »

Dark Night of the Soul: Night 1
